The Paani Foundation is an Indian organization that is non-profitable and no-governmental and is active in the area of drought prevention and watershed management in the state of Maharashtra, India. Indian actor Aamir Khan and his wife, Kiran Rao are the founders of the organization. The CEO of the Paani Foundation is Satyajit Bhatkal.
The main aim of the Paani Foundation is to spread knowledge of watershed management and groundwater replenishment. The foundation has been organizing the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup competition since 2016. The villages compete against each other in this competition to implement watershed management and water conservation methods in the summer months that lead up to the monsoon season. This competition is billed as people’s movement against drought. It starts from late March or early April and continues till late May to early June. The foundation selects drought-hit tehsils. They then train a group of residents in watershed development. The foundation then organizes a 45-day “water cup” contest among villages to see who creates the maximum possible rainwater storage capacity.
