Prepare to Scream all over again: a fifth installment of the iconic slasher movie franchise is on the way.
And it’s about time too. Scream 5 was first confirmed way back in 2011, with writer Kevin Williamson revealing he was contracted to work on the film. However, the project was seemingly scrapped after the closure of studio The Weinstein Company in 2018.
Luckily for fans, a new producer (Spyglass Media Group) has revived the series, with several key cast members reprising their roles.
Who are the returning characters in Scream 5? And when will it come out in cinemas? Here is everything you need to know.
Release Date
Scream 5 is scheduled to be released in 2021 but the exact date is not yet confirmed.
The film will mark 25 years since the franchise’s first film, Scream, was released in cinemas.
Cast
David Arquette is set to take on his role as Dewey Riley, who has appeared in all four previous Scream films.
“I’m thrilled to be playing Dewey again and reuniting with my old and new Scream family,” he said (via THR) after the announcement. “Scream was such a big part of my life, and for myself and the fans.”
Friends star Courteney Cox is also set to join the franchise (with THAT fringe again, hopefully).
Cox and Arquette met in 1996, on the very first Scream. The pair soon coupled, and in 1999 married. Despite splitting in 2010, Arquette says the couple are still in good condition, co-parenting their daughter Coco.
“We’re in touch quite a bit. It’s great,” he told ET online. “But we always love working together. She’s an incredible actress, so it’ll be fun to bring these characters back to life and see where they’re at. Co-starring’s the easy part.”
Ghostface has also been confirmed, the series’ masked villain will return to the series, played by Roger L Jackson once again.
Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott in the first four movies, is still officially to be signed on the film. The actress, however, is rumored to be in discussions with producers.
Storyline
Previous Scream films followed Sidney Prescott, a high school student (then author) as she is attacked by several knife-wielding serial killers wearing a ‘Ghostface’ mask.
Friends Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) accompany Prescott in each film.
How Scream 5 will proceed from part four, which ended with Prescott battling off another horde of monsters, has yet to be verified.
