The ruler of Abu-Dhabi (UAE) scratched an economic boycott against Israel. This step was taken to normalise the tie between the two nations. It allows trade and financial ties between the UAE and Israel.
On August 13, 2020, a deal brokered by the US opened up the relations between two nations. According to the deal, Israel must stop to annex the western land sought by Palestine.
Ruler of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a decree. This decree abolishes the ‘Boycott law’. WAM news agency quoted,
“This law is a part of UAE’s efforts to expand diplomatic and commercial cooperation with Israel, leading to bilateral relations by stimulating economic growth and promoting technological innovation”.
The Saturday announcement revokes the law which was in UAE’s right after the formation.
This announcement came when the Israeli aeroplane was ready to take off the first direct flight to UAE. Also in May, an aeroplane travelled from UAE to Tel Avi to supply requirements to fight against COVID-19. This became the first flight from UAE to Israel.
Foreign Minister of Israel, Gabi Ashkenazi, applauded the step taken by the government. According to him, this step will bring peace in the region. Additionally, it will also help in achieving substantial economic and commercial growth.
After the announcement of the decree, officials stated that they were looking for cooperation in the following sectors:
  • Medicine,
  • Tourism,
  • Defence,
  • and Technology.
  • UAE

What Does Palestine Say?

This step, right after its announcement was heavily criticised by the Palestine Government. To recall, Palestine is suffering one of the world’s worst economic crisis. This law, as officials say, does no good to the people of Palestine. Many also believe that UAE ignored the current state of Palestinians.
The controller of the Gaza Strip calls the deal ” a stab in the back”. The spokesman of Hazam said during an interview that,
“This agreement does absolutely not serve the Palestinian cause, it rather serves the Zionist narrative. This agreement encourages the occupation [Israel] to continue its denial of the rights of our Palestinian people, and even to continue its crimes against our people.”
Along the same line, The Fatah movement also said according to the opinion of Hazam. UAE is ignoring its humanitarian duties towards the people of Palestine.
After the announcement, UAE became the third Arab country to have ties with Israel. This list already includes Jordan and Egypt.
