Mr. Sunshine is a South-Korean historical romantic drama, which aired on July 7, 2018. Mr. Sunshine is written by Kim Eun-sook and directed by Lee Eung Bok. The writer-director duo had previously worked together on hit shows like, ‘Descendants of the Sun’ and ‘Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.’ The story is set in Hanseong, in the early 1900s.
What is the storyline of Mr. Sunshine?
The show is about Eugene Choi, who was born into the slavery class in Joseon. He escapes to the United States for a better future. He comes back to his homeland after fighting in the Spanish-American war. While in Joseon, he falls for a noblewoman, Go AE-Shin, who is a part of the Righteous Army. But, their relationship was not accepted due to differences in their classes and the fact that Ae-Shin is betrothed to a nobleman, Kim Hee Sung. Choi Yoo Jin also gets involved with the Korean politics. He wants to improve the colonization state in South Korea.
The show made its place as one of the best Korean Shows in 2018. It’s because of its deep storytelling and its focus on Korea’s history. The show also highlighted various treatments, such as with women and lower-class people.

The first season ended on September 30, 2018. According to the cast and crew, the season reached its usual finale, and there will not be any further seasons. Lee Byung-hun expressed his gratitude after the finale, “As the drama comes to an end, I remember all the moments throughout spring, summer, fall, and winter of this year. As my first show in a long time, ‘Mr. Sunshine’ was a never-ending parade of excitement and nervousness.”
Yoo Yeon Seok, who played a rebel fighter in love with Go Ae Shin, said, “I feel a lot of regrets at saying goodbye to a project that I’ve worked on for a whole year. It won’t be easy to say goodbye.”
