The United States has imposed sanctions on four companies from China and Russia. This is for supporting Iran’s missile program. According to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, this program remains a significant proliferation concern.
The sanction announcement was made on Friday, 27th November 2020. The US continues to take tough measures against Iran for continuing its activities related to nuclear arms.
Pompeo had said that the US has sanctioned four entities in China and Russia for their support of Iran’s missile program. This program remains a significant proliferation concern. The US will continue to use all its sanctions tools to prevent Iran from advancing its missile capabilities.
The companies under sanction are Chengdu Best New Materials Co Ltd and Zibo Elim Trade Co, Ltd. in China. Nilco Group also known as Nil Fam Khazar Company and Santers Holding and Joint Stock Company Elecon is under sanction in Russia. This is for transferring sensitive technology and items to Iran’s missile program.
Iran Insists That Its Nuclear Program Is For Peaceful Purposes
President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the landmark Iran nuclear deal in the year 2018. After withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear deal, Trump also asked all countries to reduce their purchase of oil from Iran to zero. Either they reduce their purchase or face secondary sanctions.
Iran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Pompeo said that all countries also need to remain vigilant to efforts by Iran to advance its missile program.
Pompeo said that these measures are part of the US’s response to Iran’s malign activities. These determinations underscore the continuing need for all countries to remain vigilant to efforts by Iran to advance its missile program.
He further added that the US will continue to work to impede Iran’s missile development efforts. The US will use their sanctions authorities to spotlight the foreign suppliers. The suppliers include such companies as in the People’s Republic of China and Russia. They provide missile-related materials and also technology to Iran. The imposing of sanction include restrictions on US government procurement, US government assistance, and exports. This will be in effect for two years.
Pompeo said the imposition of sanctions against these foreign entities is also consistent with the efforts of the US. The efforts of the country are to use all available measures to prevent Iran from advancing its missile capabilities.
Under the 2010 United Nations Security Council Resolution 1929, Iran is prohibited from undertaking any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons. This also includes launches using ballistic missile technology.
