Saudi Arabia is currently ready to act upon India’s concerns over the issue of the incorrect map that has been depicted in the currency note. According to sources, Saudi Arabia is most likely to withdraw the banknote soon. Saudi Arabia is also taking necessary actions in this regard.
A New 20 Riyal banknote released to mark Saudi Arabia’s Presidency of the G20 grouping. The note features a world map on it that does not show Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as part of India.
MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava has said that India has asked Saudi Arabia to take urgent corrective steps in the matter. India has also emphasized the fact that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of the country.
He said that they have seen the banknote which gives an incorrect depiction of India’s external territorial boundaries. The note was issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority on 24th October 2020. It was to mark the occasion of the Saudi presidency of the G20 grouping.
He further said that they have conveyed their serious concern to Saudi Arabia. They have done this both through their Ambassador in New Delhi as well as in Riyadh. They have also asked the authorities to take urgent corrective steps for this gross misrepresentation of India’s external territorial boundaries on an official and legal banknote of Saudi Arabia.
He further established the fact that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India.
The 2020 G20 Riyadh Summit
The 2020 G20 Riyadh summit will be the fifteenth meeting of the Group of Twenty. It will be held on 21st and 22nd November 2020 in Riyadh which is the capital city of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi king, Salman bin Abdulaziz will be chairing the summit.
Saudi Arabia will be guiding the work of the G20. They will do this under the theme of “Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century for All”. It will focus on three aims that are :
- Empowering People. By creating the conditions in which all people especially women and youth can live, work, and thrive, this can be achieved.
- Safeguarding the Planet. This will be done by fostering collective efforts to protect the global commons.
- Shaping New Frontiers. This will be done by adopting long-term and also bold strategies to share the benefits of innovation and technological advancement.
- Commemorative. Saudi Arabia released a 20 riyal commemorative banknote to mark the G20 presidency. But this note has been a subject of concern for India as the map depicted does not feature J&K and Ladakh has part of the Indian territory.
