When US President-elect Joe Biden was in the financial capital of India in 2013, the audience had told that his far-off family was staying in Mumbai.
Two years later at an event in Washington, he repeated his argument that five Bidens live in Mumbai.
In just over two months the 77-year-old Democrat will be the 46th President of the USA, but nobody in Mumbai has so far reported being Biden’s family member.
Decades after he had received a letter from someone named Biden from Mumbai and soon afterwards became a congressman, Biden discovered that he had served in the East India Company as the “great, great, great, great great grandfather.”
‘In Mumbai, India, there are 5 Bidens,’ Biden, then Vice President told the Washington crowd in 2015 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the India-U.S. civil nuclear agreement at an event hosted by the Business Confederation and Carnegie International Peace Factory Endowment.
In 2013, on his first vice presidential trip to India, when he travelled to Mumbai, he spoke about this letter, which he got when he was first elected senator decades earlier. He revealed his story of the “Biden from Mumbai” in his speech to the Bombay Stock Exchange on 24 July 2013. “It’s a privilege for me to be back in India and to be here in Mumbai. I was recalled that I was elected as one of the first letters I got and I apologise to be never following up on the script when I was 29 in 1972. It was an honour for me to be back in India.
“Maybe any audience genealogist will take me on board but I got a letter from the man Biden, Biden, from Mumbai, saying we are connected,” Biden told the audience in Mumbai seven years ago. In his speech to Washington in 2015, Biden said that George Biden was the Captain of East India’s trade firm and agreed, after his retirement, to live in India and to marry an Indian lady. Someone, including the telephone numbers of the Bidens in Mumbai, said that Biden had also told him. He told the crowd he still had to call his Mumbai family, however, he intended to. It is not clear if he tried to get in touch with them, as the five offers he claimed did not “surface.”
