Three days earlier, former CM Mehbooba Mufti and PDP president said that she will not contest the election to hoist the Tricolour until the constitutional changes are rolled back. These changes were done on the 5th of August. A separate flag is restored to J&K. After this statement, now three senior leaders of the party submit their resignation and left the party. They said Mufti’s remark is “hurting patriotic sentiments”.
The two-page resignation letter submitted by founding member and former general secretary Ved Mahajan and PDP MP T S Bajwa contains some serious concerns. They wrote, “ We are feeling quite uncomfortable over some of her actions and undesirable utterances. Especially those which hurt patriotic sentiments.’’
They further expressed that, their as well as people’s sentiments being hurt. “Some of the actions and utterances are unpardonable and unforgettable by the people. It is not possible for the party to emerge out and move in a direction of its fundamental approach and identity, besides regaining its image as a political alternative. In view of this, we feel uncomfortable and suffocated in the party, forcing us to make a difficult decision about leaving the party,” they wrote.
They wrote that the party already had faced a “larger challenge” in 2014 when president Mufti Mohammed Sayeed took a “difficult decision”. He had joined hands with the opposition BJP.
“However, he knew the difficulties of such a decision he made. He attempted to change the challenges into new opportunities in furtherance of his vision for a better future. He tried to keep a more harmonious relationship between the people of the state within the Indian union.” They wrote.
