A woman reportedly imprisoned in a toilet for more than a year by her husband was rescued from the village of Rishpur in Haryana’s Panipat district. Meanwhile, the husband believed that the wife was mentally ill.
Women Protection and Child Marriage Prohibition Officer Rajni Gupta, who was in charge of the rescue operation, said that the woman did not appear mentally ill and her physical state suggested that she had died of malnutrition. “I have got reports that a lady has been trapped in the bathroom for over a year. I’m moving here with my squad. We found that when we reached here, it was real. It seems like women haven’t eaten anything for several days, “said Gupta, news agency ANI.
A complaint has been registered and an investigation is underway.
“She was mentally unstable. We ask her to sit outside but she does not sit there. We have taken her to doctors but there was no improvement in her condition,” he said.
Gupta added that they were talking to the woman, and the police are going to take more action. “It is said that she is mentally ill, but that is not true. We spoke to her, and it was clear that she wasn’t mentally ill. We can’t confirm whether or not she’s mentally ill, so she’s tucked up in the bathroom. We saved her and we washed her hair. We have lodged a case with the police. The police will take steps accordingly, “she said.
In the meantime, the police said they would contact the doctors to assess the mental state of the victim. “Rajni Gupta went to the village and rescued the woman who had been locked up by her husband Naresh for over a year. We have registered a report and we will take action after an investigation has taken place. It is said that the woman is mentally ill. We will follow the recommendation of the psychiatrist and continue to do so, “said the police officer.
