China is aiming to test more than nine million residents of the port city of Qingdao in five days. This is following a minor outbreak of the coronavirus in the port city. According to health officials, this will be the first mass testing in months in China.
The country where the virus first emerged has controlled the pandemic largely. This is in stark contrast to many parts of the world who are still dealing with the pandemic by rolling lockdowns and high case numbers.
On Sunday, 11th October 2020, six new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Qingdao. Qingdao is a northeastern city in China of 9.4 million population. The cases’ origin is in a hospital. Qingdao municipal health commission gave a statement regarding this on Monday, 12th October 2020.
China Will Test The Entire Qingdao City For New Coronavirus Cases
According to the health officials, they will be testing five districts of the city within three days and will test the whole city within five days for the virus.
China has extensive, quick test capabilities for testing of the virus. And the health commission has over 140,000 employees of medical institutions to do the job. They said that newly admitted patients and personnel have already gone through the tests in Qingdao since the cases were confirmed in the hospital in Qingdao city.
In June this year, large areas of Beijing were subject to mass tests of the virus. This was after the detection of the virus cases in this city of more than 20 million population. And the cases were linked to a food market.
China was able to bounce back since the virus emerged late last year in 2019. The virus resulted in closing the country down and hammering the world’s second-largest economy.
Hundreds of millions of people traveled across the country for the Golden Week holiday last week. This was as the country edges back to growth, while rapid tests and swift lockdowns have slowed and decreased the secondary waves of the deadly virus.
Beijing is also desperate to be the first to produce up a coronavirus vaccine for the world. Several companies in Beijing are even in their final-stage trials of the vaccine.
Although the vaccines are not clinically successful, the health officials are already administering the vaccine to hundreds of thousands of key workers and soldiers. This is as China seizes the pandemic narrative to show off the country’s resilience and the Communist government’s ability to handle the crisis better than anyone else in the world.
