Team Xecuter is one of the biggest console hacking and piracy organization. Two members of the organization have been caught. Both the members are brought in and prosecuted for piracy and fraud. One of the member is Gary Bowser and the other is Max Louarn. Max is a French national while Gary Bowser is originally from Canada. Both were arrested in Dominican Republic and Bowser led the group according to the reports. The notorious group makes tools for cracking locked-down gaming hardware. Also, Team Xecuter is best known for its hacks for Nintendo. This also includes a USB device that is termed as the SX Pro. This device allows its user to manipulate Nintendo Switch in order to play pirated games.
The Details On The Arrest Of These Members Of Team Xecuter :
Team Xecuter is a very controversial team in the modding and emulation industry. This is because the rest of the communities focus on open-source efforts while Team Xecuter works for profit. Other communities don’t sell products as it tends to attract federal authorities and the console makers. This is a grave situation that all others in the community shy away from. Among other devices, Team Xecuter also makes hack for other Nintendo devices. These gaming devices include the Nintendo 3DS and the NES Classic, etc. Nintendo is well-aware of the group. It filed two complaints against Team Xecuter back in the month of May. Nintendo wants to shut down all the 3rd party platform that sell the stuff from Xecuter online to close down.
Nintendo has a history of aggressive litigation against use of its property and hence, it has gone after many sites. THese includes many gaming sites that hosts its games, ie, the ROM sites. Also, it went after many online stores and other sites. These sites sell pirated content and other hardware. Hence, Nintendo seeks to eliminate all such parasites. Brian C. Rabbitt is the acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. He gave a statement :
“These defendants were allegedly leaders of a notorious international criminal group that reaped illegal profits for years by pirating video game technology of U.S. companies. These arrests show that the department will hold accountable hackers who seek to commandeer and exploit the intellectual property of American companies for financial gain, no matter where they may be located.”
Now, both men will face prison time of at least 20 years each. Now, there are other charges too like money laundering, wire fraud, etc for which they will be sentences too.
