Spoilers
‘Higurashi no Naku Koro ni’ is the core of Keiichi Maebara, a young boy who has recently arrived in the peaceful village of Hinamizawa. It’s the warm summer of 1983, and everything seems perfect to him. He begins a new kindergarten, soon becomes close friends with three girls, and enthusiastically awaits the forthcoming village festival. His decision to move to Hinamizawa turned out to be very fruitful. However, little he knows that something sinister lurks underneath the peaceful atmosphere of the village.
As the rest of the village is planning for the upcoming festival, Keiichi is catching the wind of some of his grim urban legends. Out of all the worldly tales and legends that he knows regarding, one terrifies him the most when it relates to the festival. He discovers that for years, the village has been plagued by many killings and disappearances, many of which are directly related to the festival and the patron god of the village, Oyashiro.
Now, like any other human, he would have ignored it as some kind of gossip. But things get creepier as he attempts to carry the tale to his new friends, and neither of them reacts to his concern about the events. Any time he thinks about it, they stay curiously quiet. Through what follows, Keiichi finds himself in the midst of strange occurrences that not only make him doubt his existence but also his blind faith in his mates.
As Keiichi dives further into the secrets of his village, madness, and fear set in and discovers that there is much more to the village than he had previously expected.
