The Plot of the Show
The show revolves around Erskine and Konkle playing versions of themselves as 13-year-old outcasts in the year 2000. They are surrounded by actual 13-year-olds. It follows the life of their middle-school as it is where the best day of your life can turn into the worst day of your life.
The firsts season had funny firsts like discovering AIM, wearing thongs, and shaving. The second season kicks off innocently but turns darker. The second season focuses on what happens when the shine of being a teen wears off. The characters dredged up all of their repressed pain associated with these stories.
Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle in an interview said that the entire show is meant to keep you in the purgatory that is middle school. they turned the sophomore season would be a messy gray area. Although we are not very sure about the plot of the second part of the season, we do hope the characters finally find something to bring a smile on their faces.

The show is sincere, not satiric, hilarious but not a sketch and nostalgic only when you are not shaking with horror from all that painful teenage angst.
