Mehbooba Mufti’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held their first meeting after the abolition of Article 370. PDP held the meeting at their headquarters in Srinagar on 16th September 2020. Party leaders like Abdul Rehman Veeri, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Khursheed Aalam, Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, Suhail Bukhari attended the meeting.
Party president Mehbooba Mufti still remains under house arrest. A meeting by the party earlier could not take place after most of the party leaders were not allowed to move out of their residences.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the PDP meeting. He said in a tweet that it is good to see Youth JKPDP make a start with political meetings. Political activities in Jammu & Kashmir must resume unhindered and the administration is duty-bound to ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
Discussions in the PDP Meeting
Party officials said PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s continued detention was a point of discussion. The former chief minister is the only remaining prominent mainstream leader who is still booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
PDP leaders also held a demonstration earlier seeking Mehbooba Mufti’s release. They raised the issue of alleged human rights violations. The Detention of seven party members took place during the demonstration.
Party’s Youth President Waheed Para said that the residents have suffered a lot. There is unending insecurity among the young. Along with this, there are also fresh fears of a demographic change, assaults on jobs, culture & language. He said that they cannot afford to remain silent any longer. They need to speak now to restore their dignity and take charge of their own destinies.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti’s Detention
MP Mir Mohammad Fayaz who si from PDP on 17th September 2020 raised the issue of the continued detention of J&K’s former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and other political leaders in the Rajya Sabha.
Fayaz said that the former Chief Minister ran a coalition government with the ruling party at the Centre. And now she is an anti-national. He added that she has been an MP, MLA and the Chief Minister of the erstwhile state. Her father was the Home Minister of the country.
Fayaz also demanded that she and other political leaders should be released immediately. He said that there is a fear in the state. It is that if you speak, you will be put in jail.
The Jammu and Kashmir government extended the detention of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti under the Public Safety Act for another three months on 31st July 2020.
Mehbooba Mufti, the President of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was under the house arrest after the abolishment of Article 370 on 5th August 2019. Two other Chief Ministers, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah were also detained last year but they were freed a few months back.
